According to Punch, the middle aged palm fruit cutter connived with another suspect, Obinna Erondu, to commit this cruel act.

Commissioner of Police, Joshak Habila, who paraded the suspect along with other criminals, said that luck ran out on him when a worried wife alerted the police over the questionable disappearance of their sick baby.
But the suspect didn’t admit his fault and told Punch correspondent that he did not sell his son but only took him to a herbalist because the boy was ill. According to the man, the herbalist gave him N140,000 and told that he could not heal the baby so the father had to leave the son in the herbalist’s house.

When Mr. Maduabuchi returned home, his wife immediately demanded explanations on the whereabouts of their son. As he could not offer any convincing  answer, the woman began to cry. The husband came to curdle her when suddenly the polytene bag in his hand tore and splashed money on the floor. Worried by the source of the money, the wife raised the alarm which attracted some neighbours who helped to arrest the husband.

Later the suspect led the police officers to the herbalist’s house at Owerrinta where the boy was recovered and reunited with his mother.
