As the presidential elections commence, top politicians in Rivers state are reported to have checked their families into hotels in bids to protect them from the unknown.
At about 8.45pm March 27, Friday, a top politician was spotted in the state checking his family into a hotel near Casablanca, a popular nightclub in the New GRA.
According to Premium Times, non indigenes, mostly of Hausa origin have also started a mass exodus from the state by trucks. This is in addition to many Akwa Ibom indigenes in the state who have also packed and moved out of Port Harcourt.
Mr Briggs, a Port Harcourt resident, explained that many non indigenes fear that they may be trapped here if a crisis erupts after the result of the election is announced.
He said: “Normally, you see a lot of Hausa boys selling recharge cards near the Presidential Hotel, Genesis Cinema and in the many places in the Old Port Harcourt Township. But since Monday, many of them started leaving and by today, you can’t see any of them around.
Several parts of Port Harcourt city, the streets and major roads have been deserted while social centres like Genesis Cinema and Sylverbird Cinema have closed their doors.
In a bid to avoid being caught up in violence that may erupt after the March 2015 general elections, politicians, many chief executive officers, chairmen of companies, top businessmen and wealthy Nigerians have moved their families out of Nigeria.
